Dead Stock Finder privacy policy

Last updated 2 November 2026

Dead Stock Finder is operated by Understory. It finds products in a Shopify store that have stock on hand but have not sold for a chosen number of days, shows the money held in that stock, and lets the merchant tag those products, add them to a collection or discount them. This policy explains what the app touches and why.

What the app reads in Shopify

The app reads products: title, handle, status, vendor, product type, creation date and featured image, and for each variant its price, stock on hand and unit cost. It reads orders only to learn which products sold and when: each order's date, whether it was cancelled or a test, and the product and quantity on each line. It does not read customer names, addresses, email addresses or phone numbers, or payment information.

What the app changes in Shopify

The app only changes the store when a staff member picks products in the app and chooses an action: adding a tag to those products, adding them to a collection the app creates, or creating an automatic discount for them. Each action can be undone in the app.

What the app saves

For each product with stock we save its title, handle, status, vendor, product type, image address, creation date, units in stock and stock value at cost and at retail. For each product we save the date of its latest sale. We do not save orders or anything about the people who placed them. For each action we save what it did, which products it touched, when, and the Shopify staff user ID who chose it. For the store we save its settings, currency, plan, and an expiring access token.

Billing

Plans are handled by Shopify. The app reads which plan is active. We never see payment details.

Service providers

Cloudflare hosts the app, stores the data above and receives Shopify's notifications. We do not sell merchant information, and we do not use it for advertising or marketing email.

Keeping and deleting data

Stock figures, sale dates and action history are kept while the app is installed. On uninstall the access token is deleted at once. When Shopify asks us to erase a store's data, 48 hours after uninstall, everything the app saved for that store is deleted. The app holds no customer data, so requests to view or erase a customer's data have nothing to act on.
